Java-Java FC strives for  further success

Zebaldt Ngaruka

GOBABIS – Swakopmund-based football club Java Java FC, which boasts both male and female teams, continues to set its sights on long-term success in regional football leagues.

The club’s men’s team competes in the Erongo Coastal League (ECL), while the women’s side plays in the Erongo Regional Women’s League (ERWL). Founder and club owner John Paku shared with New Era Sport that the team was created with the aim of eventually reaching Namibia’s top football divisions.

“Beyond just playing football, our goal is to empower youth. We keep them busy, focused and away from life’s many distractions. Their minds stay sharp, and they are motivated to progress in their respective leagues,” said Paku.

Currently, the women’s team is sitting in third place in the ERWL standings, while the men’s team holds the sixth position in the ECL. Paku revealed that the men’s side is pushing for promotion to the second division, while the women aim to finish among the league’s top three, with aspirations to eventually play in the Women’s Super League.

Highlighting their achievements, Paku said the men’s team has won several local tournaments including the Harris Aritz Cup, the Valentine’s Cup in Swakopmund, and also reached the quarterfinals of the 2014 Debmarine NFA Cup, where they were narrowly defeated by Orlando Pirates.

“My girls are still developing, but our vision is clear – they want to play in the Women’s Super League next season,” he added.

However, Paku admitted that the team faces numerous challenges, primarily due to a lack of sponsorship. “We do all of this under difficult conditions. We don’t have a main sponsor, yet we need to consistently provide essentials like toiletries for the girls. Sustainability is tough,” he added.

He emphasised that the club’s mission goes beyond sport – it’s about keeping young people on the right path.

“We are committed to guiding these young boys and girls. Even without resources, we want to protect them from teenage pregnancy, alcohol, and drug abuse.”

Founded in 2011, Java Java FC continues to be a pillar of community development through sport, driven by passion and determination in the face of financial hardship.
