OTJIWARONGO – A 52-year-old resident of Otjiwarongo, Petrus Kavari has persevered against all odds and is currently operating a thriving venture by harvesting grass to create bundles for animal feed. With five school-going children to support, Kavari sells each bundle of grass for N$50, thereby ensuring a steady income to sustain himself and his family.
Having struggled to escape the clutches of poverty for many years, Kavari initially relied on selling firewood to make ends meet.
However, despite his best efforts, he found it extremely difficult to improve his living conditions. Determined to change his circumstances, in March this year, he devised a plan to gather grass and convert it into marketable bundles.
Equipped with only a wheelbarrow and his own hands, Kavari embarked on a grass-harvesting business. This entails him transporting the harvested grass to his home, where he skillfully bundles it, ensuring high-quality feed for animals.
The demand for his bundles has been remarkable, as such he has steadily and successfully secured a loyal customer base.
Kavari credits his brother for providing support and guidance, saying he played an instrumental role in connecting him with potential buyers. Kavari’s brother not only encouraged him to expand his operations but also became a customer himself, further bolstering Kavari’s confidence and financial prospects.
Since launching his grass harvesting business in March, Kavari has already sold more than 50 bundles to satisfied customers. He currently has an additional 50 bundles waiting for farmers who are expected to purchase them shortly.
“This has been a game-changer for me,” Kavari said with a sense of pride.
“With the help of my brother and the support of my customers, I am finally making a living and improving my financial situation,” he said. Kavari added that he wants his story to serve as inspiration, as it highlights the potential for innovation and resourcefulness even in the face of severe adversity. The budding entrepreneur added he is astonished that his determination and perseverance have proven that sometimes, unconventional approaches can lead to remarkable opportunities.
As Kavari waits for the arrival of more customers, his story serves as a testament to the resilience and entrepreneurial spirit that can be found within individuals, regardless of their circumstances.
A neighbour who was happy that Kavari was being profiled by New Era repeatedly described him as a hard-working man who had been selling firewood for a long period. Although the neighbour preferred anonymity, she said Kavari’s hard work is a reminder to the youth that with determination, hard work, and a bit of creativity, one can overcome challenges and forge a better future.
“His story stands as an inspiration for others, demonstrating that with perseverance and a willingness to explore alternative paths, it is possible to overcome adversity and transform one’s life,” she complimented.
In addition, Kavari passionately urges fellow Namibians not to succumb to idleness but instead to explore new business ideas as a means of improving their lives.
Recognising the prevalent issue of high unemployment and the scarcity of job opportunities in the country, Kavari also encouraged the unemployed, particularly those who do not yet qualify for government social grants or lack the necessary qualifications for securing decent employment, to take action.
“There is an urgent need for us to start working and to take control of our lives,” Kavari passionately advised. “We mustn’t let our circumstances define us. Instead, let us be proactive, innovative, and determined to create our opportunities.”
As Kavari continues to build his grass harvesting business, he appealed to farmers in Otjiwarongo and the surrounding areas to support him. By doing so, he said they not only contribute to his livelihood but also enable him to renovate his home, which he constructed two decades ago. Kavari’s call for support from the farming community reflects his unwavering commitment to providing a valuable service while striving for personal and professional growth.
His message to fellow Namibians resonates with a call to action, urging individuals to embrace entrepreneurship and take charge of their destinies.
Moreover, by supporting Kavari’s animal feed venture, farmers not only assist him in improving his living conditions but also contribute to the spirit of empowerment and self-sufficiency that can uplift communities and foster national progress.
