Former Katutura Central constituency councillor Ambrosius Kandjii, who passed away last week, will be buried on Saturday.

Family members said yesterday that Kandjii (49) will be buried at his home village Otjomukona in the Aminius constituency, Omaheke region.

A family member, who refused to be named, said the funeral service will take place at the family residence there.

A number of parliamentarians and his Swapo comrades are expected to attend the burial. The deceased will be interred in a grave next to his parents, Wilhelm and Menesia Kandjii.

Kandjii, hailed by many as a dedicated nationalist who also worked hard as a student and sports activist, died in a Gobabis hospital after a short illness.

He was being held at the Witvlei police station since 28 December for being in violation of a protection order and malicious damage to property.

Former Swapo youth league secretary Elijah Ngurare described Kandjii as a committed nationalist.

Kandjii joined Swapo in 1986, where he served on the party’s youth league executive committee from 2002 to 2008, and also as the party’s Katutura branch treasurer from 2000 to 2009.

He was the Nanso chairperson and regional treasurer from 1990 to 1992.

He was a boxing executive from 1993 to 2009; was the manager of the Namibian boxing team from 2000 to 2010; and served on the Namibia Professional Boxing and Wrestling Control Board from 1998 to 2007.
