Newly elected Erongo Regional Council chairperson Lazarus Kanelombe, has outlined a five-year development agenda aimed at improving service delivery, strengthening governance, and addressing socio-economic inequalities across the Erongo region.
Presenting his maiden statement at Swakopmund on Friday, Kanelombe said the council’s 2025–2030 Strategic Plan prioritises water security, housing, road infrastructure, youth employment, and rural development. He stressed that Erongo’s rapidly growing population, which now stands at 240 000, continues to strain local authority services.
Kanelombe pointed to Daures, Karibib, and Omaruru as constituencies in urgent need of targeted support due to high poverty levels, unemployment, and limited access to basic services. He committed the council to ensuring a more equitable distribution of development benefits.
Water shortages, particularly in Otjimbingwe, were identified as a top priority, with the council set to collaborate with NamWater and the mining sector to secure sustainable water supply solutions. He also pledged to accelerate low-cost housing development in settlements such as Uis, Okombahe, Omatjete and Otjimbingwe.
Infrastructure upgrades form a key part of the plan, including advocacy for the long-awaited 60km bitumen road between Karibib and Otjimbingwe, as well as improved feeder roads to strengthen connectivity in rural communities.
To tackle youth unemployment, Kanelombe announced plans to convert the “Yellow Building” in Omaruru into a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) centre, supporting skills needed in mining, tourism, fishing and culinary industries.
He further highlighted the region’s agricultural potential, noting promising crop yields along the Omaruru River and pledging support to emerging farmers to enhance food security.
“Together, we must unlock opportunities and ensure Erongo remains a region of progress and shared prosperity,” Kanelombe concluded.
