Khomas dominate boxing champ

Khomas dominate boxing champ

Khomas region dominated the recently concluded National Boxing Championship 2024, held in Grootfontein at Omulunga stadium, emerging as the overall winners of the tournament.

The event attracted more than 100 aspiring boxers from across the country, with all 14 regions represented, battling it out for top honours in the amateur tournament. The championship, fully funded by the Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Service, and organised by the Namibia Boxing Federation (NBF), served as a platform to select team Namibia for upcoming national and international competitions. Khomas took first place, followed by Erongo in second and Oshana in third.  Pieter Kotze, representing Khomas, was named the best male boxer of the tournament.

Speaking after his victory, he expressed disbelief and joy at receiving the prestigious title.

“It was a challenging event, but thanks to my coach and team for ensuring that I could achieve what I did. I’ve been working hard in the ring, and this win is proof that hard work truly pays off,” he remarked.

“Winning such a tournament is a huge accomplishment, and it shows that if I keep putting in the effort, I can reach the heights I’ve dreamed of. This victory motivates me to continue working hard. From here, it’s back to the gym to put in even more effort,” he said.

Meanwhile, NBF president Benjamin Rabang expressed satisfaction with the event, highlighting the immense talent displayed at the tournament.

He emphasised that with more platforms and opportunities, Namibia has the potential to produce world-class boxers.

“As we celebrate this achievement, the future of Namibian boxing looks bright. These athletes are preparing to represent the country on bigger stages, and I am pleased with what we saw. It’s now up to us to nurture and utilise the talent we have,” he said. – mkambukwe@nepc.com.na
