WINDHOEK– The Khomas Education Directorate has announced it does not have space anymore for Grades 1 and 8 learners in the region.
Angeline Steenkamp, Khomas Region Education Deputy Director in an interview with New Era yesterday revealed that so far about 7 891 Grade 1 learners have been admitted to schools in the Khomas Region but no more space is available for both Grades 1 and 8.
Khomas Region has a waiting list of 378 learners for Grade 1 and although some of them were enrolled this year, there is still a number of learners on the waiting list. “These learners will be accommodated temporarily in tents until the precast classrooms are finally ready,” said Steenkamp.
She said measures have been put in place to ensure that all learners are accommodated. “We are busy erecting tents to accommodate those Grade 1’s that have been placed in primary schools such as Khomasdal, Marti Athisari, Moses Garoeb Project School, Tobias Hainyeko and for Grade 8’s at Jan Mohr Project School,” she explained.
For Grade 8s the waiting list had about 367 learners, but all those on the list were placed. “Allow me to thank all our schools which assisted in solving Khomas enrolment problems,” she said.
The Khomas Region successfully managed to place 1 855 Grade 11 learners in the region. The remaining 750 places have been reserved for learners who want to study with the Namibian College of Open Learning (Namcol).
As of yesterday the regional admission committee put up a station at the Teachers Resource Centre in Katutura to enrol learners for Grade 11.
Regarding the Grade 10 repeaters, she noted that the status quo still remains the same for those learners who are 17 years old or younger who may repeat Grade 10 depending on the availability of space. “Otherwise they have to enrol at Namcol,” she said.
