Khwe learner dreams of AS … begs for placement

BWABWATA – In the heart of the Bwabwata National Park, nestled among Namibia’s most marginalised Khwe, 18-year-old aspiring pharmacist Selma Julius harbours dreams beyond the limits of the sky.

Julius, a Grade 11 learner from Ndoro Memorial Combined School in Bwabwata, emerged from the 2024 academic year with 31 points – a testament to her determination and resilience.

Yet, like the sands of the Zambezi slipping through one’s fingers, her aspirations face an uncertain future.

Julius has struggled to secure placement in a school offering Advanced Subsidiary (AS) studies in her preferred field of natural science. Her big hopes appear to have seemingly been dashed.

She appeals that the school should be in Zambezi, as it will be difficult for her to get any assistance if she moves far from home.

Her story is not unique. Another learner from her community, who scored 27 points in Grade 11, faces a similar challenge, pointing to a systemic issue of educational access for marginalised communities in the Zambezi region.

Julius’s resolve, however, remains unshaken.

“I want to continue with my studies and make my community proud one day,” she said, her voice a mix of hope and determination.

Her ultimate dream is to become a pharmacist, and use her education to uplift the Khwe community within the Bwabwata National Park, a community often overshadowed by the challenges of marginalisation and limited resources.

The Khwe, indigenous to Namibia’s north-eastern region, face unique socio-economic barriers, including limited access to quality education. For pupils like Julius, education is more than a pathway to personal success; it is a means to elevate their entire community.
“Selma’s achievement is remarkable, considering the challenges these learners face daily,” said a teacher from Ndoro Memorial Combined School.

“But without opportunities to further their education, their potential risks being lost.”
Julius’s plea is simple yet profound.

Put simply, she is looking for a school within the Zambezi Region offering AS studies in natural sciences.
