Northern leading boxing stable MTC Kilimanjaro Boxing Club will host its third boxing bonanza for the year on 26 August in Ongwediva.
Although they are yet to find a venue for their event, founder and trainer Joseph Bernhard has indicated they are likely to host their event at the Ongwediva Town Council Hall.
“We are still in talks with the town council of Ongwediva to see if they can allow us to host our next event at the council’s hall. However, we will keep our options open as we seek for other venues around town and surrounding places,” he said.
“I believe it’s a perfect time to host a boxing bonanza, given that Namibia will celebrate Heroes’ Day on the same date. A lot of people will be back in town, where they will relax with their families. I believe it will be the perfect time to host a boxing event, where people surrounding the town of Ongwediva can come and enjoy the upcoming talents in boxing,” said Bernard.
The bonanza will feature over 20 boxers.
He revealed they are planning on inviting the Namibian Police and Namibian Defence Force (NDF) boxing teams to partake in their event.
“We are always striving to improve from our last event, so this is the reason why we are inviting the NDF and police team from Windhoek to come and compete in our tournament. I believe in terms of competitiveness, they are up there, and can provide our boxers with the type of competition they need to improve,” added Bernard.
The competition will also serve as preparation for one of their highly-anticipated boxing bonanzas, slated for September this year, which will feature eight regional teams.
“We visited several regions at the beginning of this year to offer training at various schools and constituencies. So, we will stage a boxing event to see the impact of our three months of training. We will stage a boxing event, which will include all the eight regions we have visited. I know it won’t be an easy one, but we intend to come out on top during the competition,” he said.
Also speaking to this publication, Moses Haimbili from Rainbow Boxing Club said he is thankful for the opportunities the Kilimanjaro Boxing stable provides to their boxers.
“You know, it’s very difficult to stage a boxing bonanza. It’s costly, and we don’t have a sponsor, so the only time we can have our boxers fight at a serious event is when Kilimanjaro hosts boxing events,” he said.
