Kilimanjaro Boxing bonanza heads north

Kilimanjaro Boxing bonanza heads north

The country’s leading amateur boxing stable, MTC Kilimanjaro Boxing Club, will this weekend
stage an exciting boxing bonanza in Oshakati.

The event, scheduled for Saturday at Ekuku, will bring together top amateur clubs from across northern Namibia to battle for top honours across various categories. According to stable founder and trainer Joseph Bernhard, more than 100 boxers have confirmed participation.

“It’s a big one; we have over 100 boxers from various clubs who have confirmed their participation. We expect this to be a huge event for boxing in the northern regions,” Bernhard said.

He added that all preparations are done ahead of Saturday’s showdown.

“We are ready to host this event. I’m pleased with the number of clubs and boxers entered — it’s overwhelming, and we’re looking forward to the main event,” he said.

With such a large turnout expected, the bonanza promises fireworks in the ring. Bernhard urged the Oshakati community and surrounding areas to come out in numbers to support local talent.

“This is about developing the sport at the grassroots level. We expect top-quality boxing and a great atmosphere as the community rallies behind their sons and brothers,” he added.

Teremoto Boxing Club coach Emvula Emvula said his team is ready to make an impact at Saturday’s showdown.

“Preparations have gone well this week; all our boxers are fit and mentally sharp. I’m confident they will perform well come Saturday,” he said.

Emvula also applauded MTC Kilimanjaro for its role in grooming future champions. He said they are one of the few clubs offering such opportunities in these areas.

“We must commend Kilimanjaro for organising such events, because this is where talent is discovered and nurtured. These platforms are vital for the growth of regional boxing,” he noted.

Meanwhile, Tsandi Boxing Club, coach Vaino Amukwa echoed similar sentiments, saying the event offers a rare opportunity for exposure.

“This is huge for us; we hardly get such chances. Being invited by Kilimanjaro means a lot, and what they are doing for boxing in the northern regions is genuinely remarkable. For a club in a very remote area like ours, where such opportunities are rare, I believe this is a massive opportunity for the young ones. I know there will be people from all over the nation, and for us, such is a perfect opportunity to make our own mark,” he added.
