After months without any action, boxers in the northern region will get a chance to showcase their talent when the northern-based stable MTC Kilimanjaro Boxing Club hosts an event next week.
The stable recently announced plans for an amateur boxing bonanza, their third event this year, which is scheduled for the end of this month in Okahao.
Club owner Joseph Bernard said he anticipates a huge turnout, citing the seven-month hiatus from hosting events and a strong desire to provide a platform for aspiring boxers to showcase their skills as the drawcards.
“We haven’t staged a boxing event in almost eight months, and we are now providing an opportunity for our aspiring boxers to shine. Our mandate is clear: to develop and nurture talent, and that’s precisely why we are organising this event,” explained Bernard.
As the preparations reached an advanced stage, the former boxer revealed that participants engaged in two training sessions per day. Those with work or school commitments typically assemble from 17h00 onwards to fine-tune their skills, creating a palpable sense of anticipation for the upcoming bouts.
Bernard expressed confidence in the readiness of the boxers, who will go head-to-head with prospects from Okahao for top honours. “Our boxers have been diligently preparing for the past few months, and we expect a spectacular showcase of skill and determination on the day of the fights,” he declared.
Highlighting the bonanza’s primary objective, Bernard emphasised that the event aims to provide a platform for boxers in the northern regions to gauge themselves after an extended hiatus from the ring. With more than 25 anticipated bouts, he underscored the significance of such events in enhancing skills and elevating the sport’s status in the country.
“This is what we want. More fights mean more opportunities for boxers to gain skills and improve their rankings. We are enthusiastic about hosting events like this, as they contribute to the overall growth of the sport in the country,” added Bernard.
