WINDHOEK – What seems like the weapon of choice in southern Namibia, the knife wreaked havoc over the weekend. No less than five stabbings were recorded in the south.

According to the crime bulletin Aroab was the hardest hit with two murders and one attempted murder.

In an incident on Friday at about 16h00 at a local shebeen, 35-year-old Salmon Engelbrecht was stabbed in the left shoulder. It is alleged he and the 25-year-old suspect were intoxicated and started to quarrel, during which he was stabbed. The suspect was arrested and police investigations continue.

Also at the same venue on Friday at around 14h30, 28-year old Albertus Rooi was stabbed in the chest and left arm.

He was admitted to the Keetmanshoop State Hospital and his condition was described as serious. A 26-year-old suspect was arrested and is expected to appear in the Aroab Magistrate’s Court today. Police investigations continue.

The mention of a 17-year-old suspect’s mother was enough to cause him to stab a 22-year-old man to death. It is alleged Albie Bloom and the suspect were involved in an argument during which the deceased mentioned the suspect’s mother when he was killed. The suspect was arrested and will appear in the Aroab Magistrate’s Court today.

The next of kin were informed and police investigations continue.

Rehoboth also had its share of violence.  It was reported that 26-year-old Venasius Makafa Shivenge was stabbed on Friday evening at around 22h00 at a local shebeen.

It is alleged an argument erupted between the deceased and the suspect during which Shivenge was stabbed in the left side of the chest.

He was transported to St Mary’s Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The suspect was not arrested and police investigations continue.

In another stabbing in Rehoboth, 39-year-old Immanuel Boois was killed on Friday evening after an argument with the suspect. The suspect, an adult Namibian male was arrested and will appear in the Rehoboth Magistrate’s Court today. Police investigations continue.

Still in the south, an unnamed male was stabbed to death yesterday morning at around 01h40 during an argument over a cap. It is alleged the cap belonged to the suspect and he and the deceased argued about it when he stabbed the deceased in the right side of the chest.

The deceased allegedly staggered for a few metres before he fell down and died. Police investigations continue.

An inquest docket was opened by the Keetmanshoop police after a two-month-old baby suffocated to death while lying in bed with her mother. It is alleged the mother was under the influence of alcohol and was only notified about the dead baby in the morning by her son who came to greet her.

The deceased was identified as two-month-old Victoria Frederick. It is alleged the incident happened at around 22h30 on Friday at Tseiblaagte Location.

Jacobus Matroos, aka Agalies, was found dead in an old car parked outside a yard in Westerkim Location in Karasburg on Friday at around 14h00.

He allegedly had a dog bite wound on his right leg. The next of kin were informed and police investigations continue.
