Kavango West is one of Namibia’s youngest and most diverse regions, created on 8 August 2013 when the former Kavango region was split into Kavango East and Kavango West. The regional capital is Nkurenkuru, which remains the only self-governed town in the region. Kavango West has a population of approximately 123 266 people living across its largely rural landscape, with only about 8.5% residing in urban areas like Nkurenkuru and the Katwitwi settlement.
The Kavango west constituencies are: Kapako, Mankumpi, Mpungu, Musese, Ncamagoro, Ncuncuni, Nkurenkuru, and Tondoro. Most councillors in Kavango West belong to Swapo, the dominant political party in the area, reflecting the party’s strong grassroots support.
In both the 2015 and 2020 regional elections, Swapo won all eight constituencies by substantial margins, often running uncontested or with overwhelming majorities.
