Korea donates N$9m to WFP

The Republic of Korea donated N$9 million to the World Food Programme (WFP) in Namibia on Thursday.

This donation is aimed to deliver nutrition-sensitive food through commodity vouchers, and benefit 24 493 drought affected individuals in the Hardap and Zambezi regions.

In a speech read on his behalf, Deputy Prime Minister John Mutorwa said the contribution from South Korea is a reflection of humanity and solidarity.

“This moment is not only about financial support. It is also a reflection of solidarity, humanity, and the enduring friendship between our nations. The assistance we receive today provides hope, and serves as a reminder of the importance of unity in tackling crises that no single country can handle alone,” Mutorwa said.

He further highlighted that the government was working on transitioning from in-kind food assistance to commodity vouchers.

“This transition marks a significant shift in how we deliver support to our people, reflecting our commitment to modernising and improving the efficiency of our programmes,” he said.
Acting WFP country director Tiwonge Machiwenyika expressed gratitude to the Republic of Korea, assuring that the contribution would be used efficiently and effectively.

“WFP will work closely with the Namibian government, local partners and retailers to ensure that assistance reaches those who need it most,” Machiwenyika said.
