WINDHOEK – Africa’s leading young archers converged on the capital Windhoek yesterday to compete in today’s Bank Windhoek African Youth Archery Championships at the DTS sports grounds.

Seven nations are fighting it out for the African title, including qualification for the Nanjing Youth Olympic Games. Although the Championships include both the recurve and compound category, only the recurve category is an Olympic discipline with the top two nations qualifying to enter one archer for Nanjing.

During the opening ceremony, Hon Rev Hausiku, special advisor to the portfolio Minister, Jerry Ekandjo, welcomed the participating countries led by hosts Namibia, Egypt, Libya, Central African Republic, Chad, Guinea and Benin. Hausiku highlighted the great set of values of focus, concentration, discipline, tradition, elegance, precision strength and respect, which the sport of archery promotes and which are critical for success in this sports code. The president of the Federation of African Archery attended the ceremony. The Namibian team is confident of claiming podium positions in all categories during the competition. “The exceptional results and new records, which our archers have achieved earlier this month at the South African Championships, boosted the youngsters’ confidence levels,” said coach, Marja Woortmann. Action starts at 09h00 every day.
