WINDHOEK – For some learner holiday is just a word they hear about still attending extra classes and do things that keep them close to their school books.

A Grade 12 learner at the Uukule Senior Secondary School in the north, Johanna Teofilus, says it might be a school holiday but to her it is still books as she attends extra classes. “It is just holiday because I am home and not in the school hostel and that I have to choose which classes to attend,” she says. Johanna and fellows are attending classes from Monday to Thursday with every learner having to choose classes to attend depending on the subjects they do not understand and it is compulsory for the Grade 10 and 12 learners.

“These classes are good for us as they bring us to date with our school work and we get the chance to ask questions we never asked in class then.”

Johanna says she might not feel the holiday but it will be for her own good. “I will miss out on the holiday fun and resting for my good result at the end of the year and I am totally fine with that,” she says.

Olavi Hangula might not be attending classes but this does not stop him from sticking to his books. “I follow a lot of science TV programmes as they are related to my field of study. This way I keep up with my books, and I learn quite a lot because it’s mostly my books put on visual television, which makes it quite easier to understand some things as well as be more informed in different aspects,” says Olavi,  a Grade 11 learner at Windhoek Gymnasium Private School.

He adds that during the holiday he also do other activities that take up much of his time and keep him active. “I am normally occupied by a multimedia business I run in the Capital and northern parts of the country. Sometimes, like currently. Olavi also served as the National Youth Ambassador for the Namibia National Youth Council as well as the  Southern African Development Community (SADC) Junior Tourism Minister.

“I also concentrate on my regular newspaper articles published in The Namibian, so basically even on holiday I’m still very active,” affirms Olavi.
