To live within boundaries or to not…

Home Youth Corner To live within boundaries or to not…

We live in an era of abundant possibilities and most of us have freedom, more than any other time in the history of human kind.

I am saying most of us have freedom because I know of countries and nations where people are still not allowed to express their opinions without the risk of being prosecuted and others were one cannot choose who they are to marry. But living in a democratic country such like  Namibia, we have so much freedom, from the clothes we wear, what religion we desire to practice, the food we eat, and what we do with our time. Gone are the days when parents had to pick a spouse for their son or daughter. Nowadays we have the freedom to choose our spouses, our careers, and even our nationalities. People take part in different adventurous activities of their choices and pretty much do what they desire.

But here and there, people can been seen exercising their freedom a little over board. They use freedom of speech as an excuse to use bad and hate language in public and mostly on social networks. You have the right to drive a car, but you must also consider other people that are using the road and drive a reasonable speed, that is freedom. Many young people can be seen spending their parents or own hard-earned money on alcohol and in extreme cases; drugs. Some people took the concept “living out of the box” too literal and now they are on the “self-destruction” path. We might have too much freedom and endless choices but that does not mean we should make a fool out of ourselves. Just because you can have multiple sex partners does not mean you should do it. I believe freedom is a tool for us to express individuality, our creativity and to take part in activities that are of our interest. Freedom allows us to choose our desired career paths and change directions whenever we please, not to indulge in activities that are harmful to our lives and to other people.

One can use their freedom to do well instead of using it as an excuse to be irresponsible. Freedom is there to allow us to chase after our dreams in hope of advancing the living conditions of our respective communities and the people in our lives. Freedom challenges us to know how to contain ourselves and be in control of our lives and we have a choice to take up this challenge. There is a great difference in living out of the box (daring oneself to do things that are challenging) and living wildly. There are no rules in the wild, but human beings do not exist in the wild. Set some boundaries for yourself and learn when to say no. Just because you can do something does not necessary mean you have to do it. Use your freedom to help and inspire others through your words and your work. Use your freedom to create greatness and not as tool of destruction.
