WINDHOEK – Local veteran beach volleyball player Achim Lück, underlined his dominance in the domestic Kia Beach Volleyball National Tour at the DTS Sportsgrounds in Windhoek last weekend.
Lück clinched 1st place in the season’s finale to be crowned the “King of the Beach” for a 2nd year running and to top the overall standings in the men’s division. Tim Hlupic and Gerad Fischer finished 2nd and 3rd respectively. The woman’s category caused a major upset with Anita Kinder and Simone von Wietersheim going into the event topping the overall standings equal on points. However, the pair failed to make the final, but their massive point advantage was enough to ensure the rest of the field could not catch up with them – leaving one of them having to beat the other on points gained during the elimination round. As fate would have it, Kinder and von Wietersheim accumulated the same number of points in the elimination round to stay on top of the log, which meant the pair had to share the gold medal. The final of the woman’s division was made up of veterans Wiebke Hoeritzauer, Rosie Hennes, Lizette Roetcher and surprise package Mareike Talkenberg.
In four hard fought matches on the centre court, Roetcher, who had traveled all the way from Swakopmund adjusted herself best to all partners and eventually won all the games to be crowned ‘Queen of the Beach’. The second place went to Hennes with Hoeritzauer adrift in 3rd place. The social/youth category was closely contested with a total of 12 players divided into three elimination rounds whereby the best 8 advanced to the 2nd round. Mark Brinkmann, his son Luke, Marcia Guil and Björn Baas came out strongest and had to fight for the Real McCoy, the ‘Prince of the Beach’ award, while Brinkmann senior was still in contention for the overall win in this particular category. He put up a great showing and sealed the overall win to be crowned ‘Prince of the Beach’. Guil finished 2nd with Luke in 3rd place. In the girl’s category Kristin Schulz won the ‘Princess of the Beach’ title – leaving Juliane Schuckmann and Aila Barreas to pick up the pieces for 2nd and 3rd places. Cats & Dogs won the 4-A-Side event, edging ahead of Farmers Attack and Alexander Frobes Scoops.
