Outgoing mayor of Lüderitz Suzan Ndjaleka has applauded the elderly of Lüderitz for supporting and working with her during her five-year tenure.
She did the praising during the early Christmas party that she hosted for elderly and disabled people last week on Friday at Benguela Community Hall in Lüderitz.
“It is only by the love and grace of God that we can move forward as a
community and as a town,” she informed the more than 400 elderly and disabled people who were gathered at the occasion sponsored by the Mayoral Fund.
She said she was not included in the new Swapo team expected to take over at Lüderitz after this month’s regional and local authority elections. But she promised that at the end of December a book would be released detailing all the activities that took place during her term as mayor.
During the primary elections held for !Nami#nus Constituency, Ndjaleka was trounced by Jan Scholtz who won 36 votes compared to Ndjaleka’s nine votes. Elizabeth Shiyagaya got 11 votes and Sackeus Shimwandi one vote.
The elderly and people with disabilities were served with food and drinks and they each received a shopping voucher worth N$120.
Ndjaleka thanked the people for showing up at the event and wished them all a merry Christmas and a prosperous new year.
!Nami#nus Constituency Councillor Jan Scholtz said that this is the time of the year when people need to show their generosity to family, friends, the young and the old.
He said it is against this background
that !Nami#nus Constituency and Lüderitz Town Council has put the party on its annual calendar.
“We trust that this humble gesture will be accepted in good spirit and our
elders will continue to pray for us to fulfil our responsibilities, both to our Creator and to his creation. My elders, we are very happy and thankful to God for enabling us to give you this early Christmas party,” said Scholtz.
Hannelie de Langer from OK Grocer in Lüderitz said that the store decided to give the elderly and the disabled people
a ‘special’ every Tuesday, therefore De Langer advised them to bring their pension card every Tuesday to the store when they do their shopping.
