OSHAKATI- “I couldn’t be happier to share that I have found my passion in life as a make-up artist and hairstylist.”
These are the words of Laina Ndapewa-Omagano Lukas (28) whose passion revolves around a skill most women use daily, makeup.
“Yes, I love beauty products and the newest beauty trends just as much as any girl does, but it goes much deeper than that,” she says.
Lukas says her passion for working as a make-up artist can be categorised into three aspects. She enjoys the sense of empowering the individuals she works with, as well as establishing connections with her clients, and the experience of embarking on her journey as a young entrepreneur.
“I believe everyone has a special gift, and they must share it with the world. Mine is the ability to enhance people’s natural beauty, and help bring out the most confident version of themselves,” she said.
Lukas emphasised that whether you are a bride, a runway model, a real estate agent or an internet entrepreneur, one constant truth prevails: when you look good, you feel good, and when you feel good, you are in the best state of mind to share your gift with the world.
She originates from the small village of Uukuvu wAntinda, located in the Okahao constituency.
She says being without parents has been extremely tough, especially because she had to leave school prematurely.
“I have been struggling in the streets of Oshakati, trying to find a job to make a living. The struggle continued until I came up with the idea of being a make-up artist,” she said.
She calls herself a talented palsy because she learnt the trade without the guidance of a mentor or teacher.
She started her business in 2019, and it was not easy as she did not have capital.
“Like any other businesses, I went through challenges. The first bride I did make-up on cancelled my bookings on the first day because she did not like my work. It was embarrassing, but that did not discourage me. I kept on pushing and upskilling myself until I reached where I am now. I have named my business Beauty by Laina because I am very good at making people look beautiful,” she said.
The beautician added: “I encourage unemployed youth to start whatever business they think of with confidence.”
She also said they have the ability to turn their hobbies into businesses since God assists those who take the initiative, and success comes to those who are actively pushing.
“They should not focus on being unemployed, but make their dreams happen,” said Lukas.
