WINDHOEK

Wellknown for his NTN sold-out shows, theatre lovers can look forward to yet another entertaining theatre play “Baby Cloete and Sissie Kavendji” by Namibia’s own stalwart in Afrikaans theatre, Severius Majiedt.

As part of the Bank Windhoek Winter Festival, this dramatic comedy started last night and will run until tomorrow evening.

Advance tickets are available at NTN Box Office at a price of N$40 or, alternatively, at the door at a price of N$50. Doors open at 19h00 and the show starts at 20h00.

“Baby Cloete and Sissie Kavendji” takes us through the life of a 30-year-old woman, Baby, who lives on the streets of Windhoek and sleeps at the Wernhil Park taxi rank in town. As is habitual with those living on the streets, Baby is no exception to alcohol abuse and begging for money. When desperate measures call, Baby will sing for passers-by just to get a fifty cent piece, or one dollar if she is lucky.

By her side is her long-time boyfriend, Zobra who is a full-time drinker and beggar as well. He will occasionally join Baby singing as a “Duo” at a price of N$5, “hear it or leave it”. They will share their bottle of Clubman with each other and fight afterwards.

Baby met Sissie Kavendji and her 14 year-old daughter, Blara, who hails from Okakarara. They came to the big city in search of Blara’s father, Soly Angula, who left them two years previously with the promise of going to look for employment in order to take care of them. They never heard of him again.

Baby took them in, gave them a place to sleep and something to eat.

Baby, a tough and naughty woman with connections, organizes for a newspaper journalist to publish a story in the hope of finding Soly.

The question is, will they succeed in their dramatic search? And how will Soly react?

“Baby Cloete and Sissie Kavendji” is a dramatic comedy mainly in Afrikaans and English, with other local languages.
