WINDHOEK – A young man claiming to be looking for his girlfriend was arrested after trespassing on the Founding Father’s private residence in the early morning hours of September 15, by jumping over the security wall. He made his first court appearance yesterday in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court on charges of housebreaking with intent to commit a crime unknown to the State and trespassing.
Chief Inspector Kauna Shikwambi told New Era that 25-year-old Marvin Asser, went to the residential premises of the Founding Father and former president, Dr Sam Nujoma, on the outskirt of Windhoek, at around 02h00 last Sunday ostensibly looking for his girlfriend who resides within Nujoma’s residential premises. It is not known whether the girl is a relative of the former president or an employee.
“The boy is a boyfriend of one of the girls [at the Founding Father’s], he went to visit his girlfriend,” said Shikwambi adding that the young man was told that the girl was not at home. Asser allegedly persisted in seeing her and jumped over the wall of the compound.
According to Shikwambi another person who was at another residence within the premises and watching TV alerted the police, and Asser was arrested on the scene. Shikwambi could however not confirm or deny whether the young man was under the influence of alcohol. She further said that nothing was taken and no damage was caused.
Asser was not asked to plead, but his right to legal representation was explained to him and he indicated that he would apply for legal aid. The charge sheet states that Asser “unlawfully and intentionally broke into and entered the house of Dr Sam Nujoma.”
Asser was granted bail in the amount of N$1 000, which he paid promptly. Asser’s case was postponed to November 1 to allow him to obtain state-funded legal aid.
