Home Art Life   Maranatha  Singers sing tomorrow in Christuskirche Requiem in Budapest, Hungary

WINDHOEK– The Windhoek-based Maranatha Singers premiere their European tour with a concert tomorrow at the Christuskirche.

The singers will be the first and only participating choir from Africa in the 10th Sing Along Festival in Budapest, Hungary from 15 – 18 May 2014.

En route to Budapest through Germany and Austria, the choir will have performances of Namibian traditional choral music, enhanced with cultural dances, movement and African percussion as part of fundraising, as the choir members are paying their airline tickets from own funds. The  concert tomorrow at the Christuskirche starts at 19h00. The programme comprises old favourites, as well as freshly arranged songs, with Marcellinus Swartbooi and Engelhardt Unaeb topping the list of composers. Ponti Dikuua’s arrangement of a medley of Namibian songs will also be included. The audience can look forward to a potpourri of Namibian cultural songs.

The Budapest Festival,  with INTERKULTUR as the  leading organisers, has selected the Mozart Requiem as the main work to be performed by about 1 500 singers from around the world, with the Berlin Radio Choir as nucleus choir, and Simon Halsey as conductor, together with the Dohnanyl Orchestra Budapest. The Maranatha Singers is more than prepared for this prestigious event, as the choir performed the same work in November 2013 at the National Theatre of Namibia as part of the Namibia National Symphonic Choir. The project is regarded as beneficial for the choir’s development and networking.
