‘Mentally unstable’ murder accused denied bail

‘Mentally unstable’ murder accused denied bail

RUNDU – A soldier from the Namibian Defence Force (NDF) Nicolaus Kakuru Kamati (25), accused of killing his niece, was denied bail.

He made his first court appearance for a murder case, read with domestic violence.

The incident happened at Mbambi village in the Mukwe constituency, Kavango East.

Kamati has been on the run since the alleged murder on Wednesday.

He was arrested on Thursday.

He is said to be mentally unstable.

Kavango East crime investigations coordinator Bonifatius Kanyetu said the victim, Kapango Mayira (22), was in her room, listening to music on headsets when the accused entered the house.

He allegedly hit her on the forehead with an unknown object, leaving her with an open wound.

“The deceased was heard by other housemates when she screamed once. They went to see what had happened, and found her in a pool of blood. The suspect fled the scene,’’ he said.

The motives behind this incident are still unknown.

The accused was denied bail due to public interest and because the case is a domestic-related matter.

His case was postponed to 3 April for legal aid application and further police investigations.

Kamati appeared before magistrate Selma Shiiga.

Public prosecutor Michael Munika represented the state in the matter.  – jmuyamba@nepc.com.na
