Stolen branded sneakers and clothing worth over N$80 000 were recovered at a backyard shack in Babylon yesterday morning.
The items goods are believed to have been stolen from a warehouse at Prosperita, where a burglary was reported on Monday morning.
The police found about 16 different pairs of Adidas and Puma sneakers hidden in the shack. Among the stolen goods were branded clothing, such as Levi jeans, Guess, Reebok bags, jockeys, vests and backpacks. There were also Jaban trousers and Adidas shirts.
A taxi belonging to one of the suspects was apparently used to transport the stolen good to the shack. The taxi was then left with the suspect after its owners travelled to the north.
The police also found housebreaking equipment they believe was used by the suspects to gain entry into Vital Distribution Solution’s warehouse in Prosperita.
According to the loss control manager at the warehouse, Peter van Wyk, CCTV footage shows three suspects making a hole beneath the boundary wall to gain entry to the premises.
Van Wyk said the suspects exited the building at around 05h20 yesterday morning. “They left empty sneaker boxes at the premises,” he said.
According to City police spokesperson Fabian Amukwelele, a member of the community tipped them off that there were some men carrying suspected stolen items into a shack in Babylon at around 06h00yesterday morning.
Amukwelele said they were not sure in which shack the suspect lived in the yard because there were more than one, but the suspect who was in the backyard shack heard the police and fled. “The suspect is known. It’s just a matter of time before we arrest him,” Amukwelele remarked.
