By Kuvee Kangueehi and Petronella Sibeene WINDHOEK A case of culpable homicide was opened against the Minister of Lands and Resettlement, Jerry Ekandjo, on Sunday after he fatally injured a six-year-old child with his car. The victim, who has been identified as Simson Kummy Umati, died at the scene a few moments after she was hit by the black ministerial Volvo sedan on the Western Bypass road near Northern Industria. The accident happened shortly after 18h00 when the Minister was going to his plot. According to a family member of the Minister, who preferred to remain anonymous, the deceased was crossing the road with a group of other children. The other children allegedly managed to cross the road in time, but Umati could not make it to the other side in time and was hit by the black Volvo. The Namibian Police confirmed the incident and said investigations to determine exactly what happened, are continuing. The Namibian Police Public Relations Department could not speculate on whether the Minister was speeding or not, saying only the investigations would determine that. Ekandjo could not be reached for comment yesterday. Meanwhile, at Mariental, a police sergeant has been arrested for allegedly stabbing a 27-year-old man to death. Police Regional Commander Kobus Meyer yesterday confirmed the incident to New Era. He explained that on Saturday at about 22h30, Sergeant Walter Fredricks (52) was playing dominos with friends at Eimablaagte when Danny Deon Louw (27) appeared and tried to disturb the game. When asked to leave, Louw threatened the sergeant by saying he would kill him in his own house. When Fredricks was about to leave, Louw tried to block his exit by standing in front of the car. A fight ensued between the two. Apparently the deceased threatened to stab the sergeant with a broken beer bottle. Fredricks angrily pulled out his pocketknife and retaliated by stabbing Louw twice in the chest. Fredricks appeared in the Mariental magistrate’s court yesterday on a charge of murder.
