Miss Erongo Expo sets sights on community

For Walvis Bay teenager Hailey van Wyk, who was recently crowned Miss Erongo Expo, beauty is more than a crown. It is an opportunity to reach out and serve the broader community, make an impact on the less fortunate, and speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves.

Van Wyk (19) was crowned during the Erongo Business and Tourism Expo in a pageant hosted by Blue Whale Events. She said she will work closely with the Blue Whale Hotel in Walvis Bay to roll out several community initiatives during her reign.

Speaking after being crowned, Van Wyk said she is honoured to be the first holder of the Miss Erongo Expo title.

“I am very happy. It is a significant responsibility, but I am willing to take it on because it will provide me with experience and guidance. Being the first to hold this title is truly special,” she
said.

She has identified six key projects she plans to champion, with a focus on vulnerable groups across the Erongo Region. One of her first initiatives will target children in hospital.

“Children who are in the hospital are going through difficult situations. I want to give them gifts and remind them that they are loved and cared for,” she said.

Animal welfare is also a priority during her reign. Van Wyk said she plans to support animals in need by donating food, toys, and other essentials.

“Animals cannot speak for themselves, so it is important that we care for them and ensure they are treated with compassion,” she said.

Youth empowerment is another pillar of her outreach. She aims to create a counselling and support group for teens to offer a safe space for them to be heard.

“Many teenagers feel that their voices do not matter. I want to empower them to speak freely and feel valued,” she said.

Her initiatives will include senior citizens and marginalised communities. Van Wyk plans to spend time with elderly residents and bring joy, while her Farm 37 project aims to uplift an overlooked community.

“I want to help improve their quality of life in practical ways,” she said.

Van Wyk called on residents of Walvis Bay and the surrounding areas to support her initiatives.

“Everyone can contribute, no matter how small. Even small acts can make a difference. I want the community to stand with me,” she said.

Outside of pageantry and community work, Van Wyk focuses on her education, currently studying for her GED. She enjoys reading and family time. She aims to advance her modelling career, having participated in Fashion Week and held the Miss Little Petite Swakop title.

Liezel Losper from the Blue Whale Hotel said the Miss Erongo Expo pageant is more than a beauty competition; it empowers young women by building confidence, leadership, and discipline, while promoting community upliftment and opportunities in tourism, hospitality, and public speaking.
