Miss Womalenga prepares to pass on crown

OSHAKATI – Despite being (65), Hiltrudus Festus says participating in Miss Womalenga gave her confidence and a platform to celebrate cultural heritage.

Festus, who currently holds the Miss Womalenga 2025 title, describes the journey as one of growth, learning and pride, saying the experience allowed her to reconnect with her roots while also inspiring younger generations to appreciate their traditions.

She shared her experience during an interview with Vibez recently at the Oshakati Totem Expo grounds, where preparations are underway for this year’s edition of the popular cultural event.

According to Festus, entering the competition was not something she took lightly, as she had to prepare herself mentally and emotionally for the responsibilities that come with representing culture and tradition in public.

“What made the competition challenging for me was that I had to prepare myself thoroughly to answer and explain every question that was asked,” she said.

She explained that contestants are expected not only to dress traditionally, but also to understand the meaning behind the attire, customs and cultural values they represent.

Festus further noted that throughout the competition she proudly wore traditional attire, adding that every item she wore carried cultural meaning and significance.

“Everything we wear has a message. The way we dress, the beads, the headwear and the traditional materials all represent who we are and where we come from,” she said.

She encouraged older women not to shy away from participating in cultural activities, saying age should never stop someone from celebrating their identity and heritage.

Festus also called on younger generations to take pride in their traditions and learn more about the importance of preserving cultural practices.

As part of efforts to preserve and promote cultural heritage, the Oshakati Town Council is once again preparing to host its annual Totem Expo 2026, where the Miss Womalenga competition will also take place.

The competition is open to women aged 35 and above, with contestants expected to showcase traditional cultural dress, confidence and understanding of their heritage.

Town spokesperson Martin Kapuka explained that the competition is about more than appearance, saying it aims to identify a woman who truly represents cultural pride through her behaviour, presentation and understanding of tradition.

“Entertainment this year will be even bigger because there will be many different cultural activities showcasing authentic traditions,” he said.

Kapuka added that the expo continues to grow every year and has become one of the most recognised cultural events in northern Namibia, attracting visitors from different parts of the country.

Different cultural groups are expected to participate in the festivities through performances, exhibitions and traditional showcases.

Apart from Miss Womalenga, the event will also feature the Miss Totem competition for younger women.

The expo is expected to run from 29 May until 6 June 2026 and will also provide business opportunities for exhibitors and traders to market and showcase their products.
