MMA training intensifies ahead of African championships

Namibia is preparing to host the 2024 International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF) Africa Championships, but organisers need help to ensure the event’s success.

After demonstrating impressive performances at various continental and global events, Namibia successfully bid to host the prestigious championship last year. Scheduled from 25 May to 1 June in the capital, this year’s IMMAF Africa Championships, supported by the African MMA Confederation (AMMAC), anticipates participation from over 10 countries and over 200 athletes.

In a recent interview with this publication, the CEO of the MMA Namibia Federation, Carlos de Sousa, provided insights into the preparations. He highlighted that training commenced last year with athletes hailing from different towns. Despite initial enthusiasm, challenges such as work commitments conflicting with training schedules have led some fighters to drop out. Currently, a selected team of 12 fighters is undergoing rigorous training.

“We initially began training with 20 fighters hailing from various towns. From this group, we carefully selected a training team comprising 12 fighters who are now training together intensively. However, we’ve encountered challenges with some of our fighters. Unfortunately, a few have had to step back due to the heavy demands of their work schedules, which often clash with training times,” he explained.

De Sousa emphasised the financial challenges facing the organisation as the competition draws closer. He revealed that the bidding process alone cost him a significant sum of US$100 000 from his funds. Additionally, he expressed the need for corporate sponsorship to cover expenses such as accommodation, transportation, and meals for athletes. De Sousa highlighted the tournament’s potential benefits, which include showcasing Namibia internationally and attracting business opportunities to the country.

“Every aspect of organising such an event requires financial support, and currently, we are actively seeking sponsors to join us in this endeavour. This initial investment also means that I will be responsible for covering additional costs such as accommodation, transportation for athletes, and catering. We are asking corporate Namibia to partner with us and provide the necessary assistance for this project. I firmly believe that hosting this tournament presents a significant opportunity to showcase our country on an international platform and attract business opportunities to Namibia,” he said.
