SWAKOPMUND – Healthcare services at the Mondesa clinic in Swakopmund have been temporarily halted following a fire that gutted the facility early Monday morning.
The fire caused extensive damage to the clinic’s pharmacy, and destroyed much-needed medicine as well as valuable paperwork and records.
Erongo police’s Chief Inspector Ileni Shapumba said, the fire was first noticed by a security guard on duty at the facility, who reported hearing multiple explosions.
“A vigilant resident also rushed to the clinic and alerted the guard about the fire,” Shapumba said.
The guard immediately contacted his supervisor, who then alerted the fire brigade.
“Preliminary reports suggest that the fire started in the clinic’s pharmacy, causing significant damage to medicines and financial records. However, consultation rooms and medical equipment remained largely intact,” Shapumba added.
He said the cause of the fire is still unknown at this stage, but a thorough investigation is underway to determine its origin.
Meanwhile, the health ministry has urged all patients who access the clinic to seek services at alternative facilities.
“Mondesa clinic will remain closed until further notice. In the meantime, patients can visit the Tamariskia clinic for general healthcare, while antenatal care, family planning, and immunisation services will be provided at the DRC clinic. Wound care services are available at Swakopmund District Hospital,” the ministry said in a statement.
Senior medical officer, Dr Lushinge Manane said efforts are underway to restore services as quickly as possible.
“The ministry, in collaboration with the Ministry of Works and Transport, is working diligently to assess the extent of the damage and facilitate repairs. We urge the public to cooperate as we anticipate an increased patient load at nearby facilities,” he stated.
No injuries or fatalities were reported in the incident, and the full extent of the damage is yet to be determined.
Authorities have urged residents with any information regarding the incident to come forward as investigations continue.
