More backing needed in the film industry – Shivute

Actor Armas Shivute said one of the things Namibians can do to ensure the film industry thrives is support productions in large numbers, so that other countries can be drawn to watching local productions.

He was saying this at a media screening of the film #LANDoftheBRAVEfilm in which he stars, adding that large numbers of people viewing local films are important for local productions to do well and to be noticed beyond borders.

“I attended a film award in Burkina Faso where I was nominated for an award that I brought home. What amazed me was how the local film industry or art industries are appreciated. A very simple theatre production will have maximum capacity viewers, and that’s what we need to learn and appreciate here back home,” expressed Shivute.

“The things which count and matter most are numbers and you cannot cope without that. You will have to rely on your people to convince other states to watch local films. How will I be appreciated elsewhere if I am not appreciated here at home? So, the numbers are crucial.”

MultiChoice Namibia is hosting the Namibian crime thriller #LANDoftheBRAVEfilm on the Showmax streaming platform.

Managing director, Roger Gertze said the availability of this film on their streaming platform Showmax gives it an opportunity to expose local talent across Africa and the rest of the world.

“We believe in using the power of entertainment to enrich lives and tell authentic Namibian stories. This is one of the countless ways we are #AnchoringForSuccess,” added Gertze.

The streaming site has been tailored and made easy for consumers as it allows them to stream Showmax using apps for smart TVs, smartphones, tablets, computers, media players and gaming consoles.

This platform allows consumers to manage data consumption, using the bandwidth capping feature and in the case of no internet, preferred content can be downloaded on smartphones and tablets and watched at a later stage.

#LANDoftheBRAVEfilm won Best International Feature Film at the 2021 Uganda Film Festival and the Best Narrative Feature Award at the 2020 Silicon Valley African Film Festival.

It was nominated for Best Picture at the 2021 Los Angeles Crime and Horror Film Festival.

Written and directed by Tim Huebschle and produced by David Benade, the exciting feature film is set against the backdrop of a dry and desolate winter in Namibia, where a tough cop is hot on the heels of an ice-cold killer. As the demons of her past return to haunt her and a public scandal threatens to unravel the investigation, she is determined to catch the killer, even if she has to break the law.
