MTC Kilimanjaro tourney a success – Bernhard …boxer to gear up for youth game

Joseph Bernhard, the founder of MTC Kilimanjaro Boxing Club, has described their recent boxing bonanza as a success. The event took place this past weekend at Iipumbu Secondary School in Oshakati.

The primary purpose of the bonanza was to select boxers from the Oshana region to represent the region at the upcoming national boxing competition and the Youth Games, which will also be held in the region later this year.

Over 20 fighters competed for top honours, with the most notable victories including Trofimus Johannes of Kilimanjaro, who knocked out Frans Eliaser from Baby Elephant Boxing Stable in the first round of the 54kg category. Additionally, Jonas Likius of Kilimanjaro emerged victorious in the 57kg category, defeating Matheus Nangombe of Oshakati Boxing. In the 51kg category, Amunyela Natangwe from Bulelo Boxing Academy beat Andrias Simon from Oshakati Boxing.

Speaking to this publication yesterday, Bernhard expressed his satisfaction with the number of boxers who came out to showcase their talent, highlighting the growing popularity of boxing in the northern regions.

“We selected a team that will compete at various upcoming events, such as the Youth Games and the National Boxing Championship. We had a huge turnout, with many up-and-coming boxers eager to showcase their talent,” he said.

Bernhard emphasised the potential impact of boxing in the region, particularly for youth who may not find success academically. “Boxing has surely shown growth in the regions, and with sufficient funding, it could become even bigger. Many kids would be taken off the streets, as this sport could give them a chance at a new life,” he added.

Looking ahead, Bernhard mentioned that the selected boxers will now focus on training for the Youth Games. “As the host town, we aim to produce the best results, and put our region back on the map as one of the most successful regions in boxing.”
