Former president of the Khomas Basketball Association (KBA) Nigel Mubita was last Saturday elected new president of the Namibia Basketball Federation (NBF) and will see him lead the local basketball governing body for the next four years.
The NBF elections took place in Windhoek over the weekend and will see Mubita being deputised by Eliphas Haifidi as vice-president. The elective congress also saw over 22 regional federations in attendance and voting for the other additional executive members.

Speaking to New Era Sport yesterday, former NBF development officer Malakia Matias, who also partook in the elections at the weekend, expressed his satisfaction with the way the process was conducted and is happy with the new members.
“We had the elections on Saturday and it was conducted virtually – it was the first of its kind due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. It saw over 22 regional associations taking part in electing the new NBF leadership. This shows that the election was done fair and partially, we had the process monitored by the Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) and a few basketball veterans,” he said.

Meanwhile, Namibia is set to miss an opportunity to compete in the fourth edition of the Southern Africa 3X3 U/18 basketball tournament that was initially slated for Bulawayo, Zimbabwe next month, but had to be cancelled due to Covid-19.
“I believe postponing the tournament to next year is the best decision – health is a very important issue at the moment. I think a lot of countries would have not been well prepared for this tournament even if it was to be staged. So moving the tournament to next year will give teams a chance to thoroughly prepare for the tournament,” Matias strongly believes.
