Mubita transforms adversity into success

In 2019, Mutelo Mubita graduated with a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Namibia, brimming with aspirations for a successful career.

Nevertheless, he soon encountered the harsh realities of the job market, which hindered his ability to find stable employment.

Confronted with this obstacle, he made a significant choice to redirect his efforts towards entrepreneurship, establishing a kapana business named Kapana Ya Kanjalo at the Chotto compound Covid centre in Katima Mulilo.

“During my job search, I realised that I needed a sustainable source of income. Starting a business was a natural choice for me. My kapana venture, which specialises in the popular Namibian grilled meat, has flourished over the past five years, providing a steady income, while I continued to search for a teaching job,” he said.

Despite recently obtaining a permanent position, he has opted to preserve his entrepreneurial drive by continuing to operate his business. He is convinced that diversifying income sources is crucial. His enterprise has provided him with financial stability, and the liberty to passionately engage in his pursuits.

Nonetheless, the path was fraught with challenges. Mutelo candidly acknowledges that launching a business was not easy. Securing initial start-up capital and an appropriate business location proved very difficult, considering he was unemployed.

He underscored the cultural significance of being productive, especially for men within his community.

“As a man, it is not easy to be at home doing nothing. That’s why you see crime is high in our country, especially among young people, including graduates. My advice to everyone is to stay occupied by engaging in business. This will help you put food on the table, and fulfil your responsibilities,” he noted.

With a resolute belief in the power of persistence, Mubita encouraged fellow graduates to remain hopeful and proactive.

“Never lose hope, because everything is just a matter of time. Put everything in God’s hands,” he added.

He advised young individuals facing challenges in securing employment: “Do not abandon your aspirations. Be patience and persevere. Above all, identify a passion, and transform it into a viable business opportunity.”
