Murder victim’s journal unearth entangled web

Delia Weimers-Maasdorp had allegedly intended to issue a restraining order against the accused before she was killed.

This was revealed by Ramon Maasdorp, the ex-husband of the victim while testifying on the stand during the continuation of the bail hearing of Wentzel Maasdorp yesterday.

Ramon stated that he had met the victim on 25 April 2024 – the day she is suspected to have been killed.

He said as the family was preparing for a trip to Bali, the victim had come to his house to say goodbye.

She had packed their two children’s bags.

“Later, we went for dinner, where she told me that she and Wentzel had broken up, and that she was fearing for her life. She said she wanted Wentzel out of her life, and would like to make a restraint against him,” he recalled.

Ramon said he suggested to her to stay at his house due to the previous history of violence by the accused.

Wentzel asked the victim to meet him and his uncle, who would pay back the money that the accused had allegedly stolen from her.

The information on the alleged stolen money was recorded in a telephonic conversation between the deceased and Ramon.

She stated that she suspected that the accused had relapsed into his drug addiction, as he kept stealing money from her on various occasions.

The victim’s journal entry suggested that the accused tended to make her relapse into drinking due to emotional distress.

He was allegedly also using her car without permission.

Every entry from April 2024 recorded her saying something along the lines of “Why am I struggling so much. I have to stop drinking. I have to get WM (accused) out of my life”.

This suggested that the relationship differed from what the accused had painted.

It was also revealed that they were in an on-and-off relationship.

The victim would block the accused’s cellphone number, and had once found about 70 missed calls from the accused trying to get hold of her.

She diarised feeling guilty that the accused wanted to kill himself.

Ramon stated that on 26 April 2024,  he could not get hold of the accused via calls but he kept receiving texts that were unlike her, requesting money.

He now said he believed they were coming from the accused.

He kept calling that day and the next because their departure needed an affidavit to be signed to authorise him to take the children on the trip due to their joint custody of their children after the divorce.

Ramon later came to know of her demise during the trip to Bali.

This version brings into question the accused’s testimony that they had argued due to her drinking problems.

It is also contradicted by his confession after his arrest.

Other revelations included that the accused had allegedly stolen properties of the victim, such as a Samsung smart television, which he allegedly sold for N$4 000, and an iPhone 12 for N$2 000 as well as cocaine worth N$3 000. -mukubeiuze@gmail.com
