Mushaandja brings freshness and uniqueness to jazz scene

Home Time Out Mushaandja brings freshness and uniqueness to jazz scene

WINDHOEK– For the first time last week I witnessed Afro Jazz singer Jacques Mushaandja  AKA ‘The Warrior’ perform at the Hilton Kalabar and I think it’s safe to say that we’ve got jazz in the capital covered.

With his intimate style and great feel for the lyrics, Mushaandja is one of the vocalists who are as much a story teller as he is a singer. Kolokasie and Rebel Child were probably two of my favourite songs on the night. He also belted out her hit songs including one dedicated to the legendary Andimba Herman Toivo Ya Toivo titled, Andimaba Ya Toivo, thanking him for his involvement in the liberation struggle of Namibia

Mushaandja brings a fresh, unique sound to the Jazz scene, and his performance proved that he is passionate about what he does. Hitherto  he might be a face that has better been known  to the theatre scene but he is a musician to look forward too. He performed original songs, some from his EP, Black Bantu Child, released in 2012. His music style could be described as Afro-Jazz, Afro-Chant and Afro-Beat. Henry Engelbrecht accompanied him on acoustic guitar and Antonio on percussion.

If you don’t mind vocal jazz or you simply looking for moody, mysterious, late night jazz then the Hilton Kalabar is the place to be every Thursday night from 19h00.
