MVA fund urges caution during heavy rains

Following warnings of heavy rains expected in various regions across the country, the Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund calls on motorists to drive with caution and observe road traffic rules and regulations.

The MVA Fund reminds road users of the dangers posed by wet and slippery roads, calling on motorists to exercise extreme caution, particularly when approaching waterlogged areas or attempting to cross flowing rivers.

Driving through moving water is highly dangerous and can lead to loss of vehicle control due to the strength of the water current, engine failure or being swept away by flowing waters.

During this rainy period and adverse weather conditions, motorists are advised to avoid crossing flowing rivers even when levels seem low.

Even shallow streams can be stronger than they appear.

In such instances, motorists should rather turn around and find a safer alternative route.

Other safety tips include reducing speed when the road is wet, observing a safe following distance to allow for unexpected stops, using headlights in low visibility, staying alert, and avoiding distractions while driving.

Drivers are urged to prioritise safety, avoid unnecessary risks and to never underestimate the power of moving water.

Caution saves lives.

In the event of a road crash, dial the toll-free MVA Fund Accident response number 9682.

Calling this number ensures emergency services are sent to the scene of a crash as quickly as possible to assist and save the lives of those involved in the crash.
