Mwiya calls for heroes’ welcome for inline hockey team

Freddy Mwiya, the chief administrator at the Namibia Sports Commission (NSC), has called on the nation to come out in numbers to welcome the national inline hockey team when they arrive from China on Friday.

This follows their historic bronze medal at the World Skate Games. “This is indeed history for the senior male team. They promised a medal ahead of the competition, and they went on to win a bronze medal.

Therefore, I request the Namibian people to welcome the team on Friday as they arrive late in the afternoon.

“We are to support our team to build unity of purpose. We need more cerebration. Indeed, without doubt, Namibian sport has graduated to an elite level. We are proud of our country. This is indeed all we need to be proud of,” he said.

Namibia, which made its debut at the games this year, earned a bronze medal after it defeated France 3-2 in the third and fourth play-off.

From the start of the competition, Namibia showed that they were poised to go far in the competition by beating China’s Taipei 4-3 in their opening match. This was a huge booster for them, as they went on to record more victories against the Chinese Republic and the Czech Republic to advance to the top four. There, they played France in an exciting bronze medal contest.

The team’s bronze medal win came in their first appearance at the World Skate Games, where they overcame strong opposition to secure a place on the podium.

Their achievement has been widely regarded as a significant boost for the sport’s growth and visibility in Namibia.

The team is expected to land at the Hosea Kutako International Airport on Friday.

Mwiya hopes to see supporters, families and sport enthusiasts come out in numbers to show their appreciation to the boys.
