Home Sports N$50 000 for Easter Soccer Bonanza at Katima

KATIMA MULILO – The northeastern town of Katima Mulilo is to play host to the annual Sanlam Easter Soccer Bonanza over the Easter weekend.

The competition ranks among the biggest sporting events in the Zambezi Region. Sanlam Namibia has been sponsoring this event since 2009 with more than 15 teams participating every year since its inception. Apart from the sporting event being a form of entertainment for the usually quite region, the sporting bonanza is also an event that many people in the region always look forward to with keen anticipation.

The tournament is also aimed at encouraging young people to engage in positive initiatives, in order to keep them away from activities that are detrimental such as drinking, smoking, crime et cetera. Sports activities are also important for the mental and physical health of the participating individuals.

Sanlam Namibia has so far supported numerous sports development programmes and projects across the country and remains committed to allocating resources to sports initiatives that will positively influence the lives and aspirations of all Namibians, especially the previously disadvantaged.

“The main aim of our sponsorship is to unlock the inherent sports potential that exists [in the region], as well as to unearth the hidden talent and stars in our country,” said General Manager Public and Corporate Support, Evans Simataa.

“I have attended every event in Katima and it is such a great pleasure to see the excitement and unity among residents in the region,” added Simataa, who revealed that his company has set aside more than N$50 000 for the event.

For the first time, this year a march will take place to create awareness about Gender Based Violence before the official opening ceremony at the public library in the Sports Complex on Friday starting at 07h00.
