Windhoek
The Executive Committee of the Namibia Karate Union (NAKU) has selected a strong team to represent Namibia at the upcoming three-day African Union Sports Council Region 5 Karate Championships in Harare, Zimbabwe, starting on the 26th of next month.
The team was selected after trials in Windhoek end of February this year. “Training sessions are already underway in the different regions in preparation for the competition and we are pleased with the performance thus far,” said national coach Freddy Mwiya in a statement.
“We have placed a lot of emphasis on the fitness levels of our karatekas in the past six months and believe this exercise will assist our athletes to perform better when the competition starts,” added Nichol Sibeso, NAKU’s public relations officer.
“The team feels better prepared for the competition and we hope to improve our overall standing at the tournament,” he said. Namibia finished 3rd behind South Africa and Botswana, in that order, at last year’s tourney.
