Namcor and partners commence well drilling

The National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia (Namcor), together with its joint venture partners Rhino Resources (Operator), Azule Energy and Korres Investments, have commenced with the spudding of the Volans-1X exploration well, located offshore Namibia within Block PEL 85 of the Orange Basin.

Drilling is being carried out by the semi-submersible Deepsea Mira, operated by Northern Ocean, in water depths of approximately 1 200 metres. The operation is expected to take around 55 days to complete.

This well represents the third drilling operation in the block and marks a significant milestone for Namcor and its partners in further evaluating the potential of the Orange Basin, one of the most promising hydrocarbon provinces in the region. While located in proximity to several major discoveries, the Volans-1X well is designed to test a new channel fairway, believed to contain a sheet-like reservoir morphology. A successful outcome could unlock new development opportunities and enhance the long-term energy outlook for Namibia.

The Joint Venture for Block PEL 85 comprises Rhino Resources (42.5%, Operator), Azule Energy (42.5%), Namcor (10%) and Korres Investments (5%).

Namcor Acting Managing Director Victoria Sibeya commented: “As Namibia’s national oil company, our participation in the Volans-1X well underscores our commitment to responsibly advancing the country’s energy sector.

With the support of our experienced partners, we continue to strengthen Namibia’s upstream capabilities and explore opportunities that will ultimately contribute to national development, local content, and long-term energy security.”

The well is being operated by Rhino Resources, with well construction services managed by EXCEED and integrated well services sourced locally through Halliburton Namibia. This reinforces the Joint Venture’s commitment to local participation and skills development in the Namibian oil and gas value chain.
