WINDHOEK – Namibia’s Brave Warriors have been drawn in Group K, alongside Senegal, Niger and Burundi and will have to negotiate their way past the three in order to book a place in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).
The official draw took place in Cairo yesterday after it was announced that Gabon would host the 31st edition of the competition.
The winner of each group will qualify along with the two best second-placed finishers. Hosts Gabon qualify automatically and will compete in Group I.
The qualifiers will start on June 12-14.
Gabon previously co-hosted the 2012 edition of the Africa Cup of Nations with neighbours Equatorial Guinea.
Unam, Tura Magic clash tonight at Independence Stadium
Meanwhile at home, highly confident George Dlamini, acting coach of Unam FC, insists the sacking of head coach Marcello Wakudumo will not deter the team from attaining its goal of remaining in topflight football come next season.
Dlamini was speaking ahead of tonight’s clash against Tura Magic at the Independence Stadium in Windhoek at 19h00, in a match that will serve as a must-win for the university outfit as only a victory against Magic will be the thing that will keep the relegation axe at bay in the meantime.
“It’s always not easy for a team to part ways with their coach at such a crucial stage of the season but we have strong players and a competent technical squad to carry the team through. Obviously the players’ morale was a bit down at first following Wakudumo’s departure, but we have managed to motivate and reemphasize the importance of not losing track of our goals as a team,” said Dlamini.
Dlamini maintained they have trained hard and are well prepared for today’s encounter, adding that they will however be without captain Amy Savihemba who is still serving his red-card suspension.
