Namibia’s ability to host international sporting events manifested itself in the last three weeks with Namibia’s capital Windhoek playing host to the 2016 Cosafa Castle Cup, delivering a near faultless spectacle with utmost diligence and applause from those in the know.
Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) Roger Kambatuku says the hosting of the regional annual football tourney was rated highly by football heavyweights and feels the desire to give those involved a pat on the back.
“We really have to thank our government, principal sponsor Castle Lager and other co-sponsors, including the entire LOC crew team, for a job well done. Everyone who came for this competition was pleased – leaving us a much sought-after host as a result of the high level of efficiency in how we conducted ourselves as Namibians.”
Although attendance was poor at some matches, Kambatuku reckons the overall attendance was better and greater whenever the home side played, while the final also drew a decent crowd. He further makes special mention of the fans, led by Namibia’s first citizen, President Dr Hage Geingob.
“Special thank you to all the fans that came to support the event, braving the cold weather, and a very special thanks for the support towards the Brave Warriors as well. It was exceptional and gifted the competition a different dimension indeed.”
He also lauded the presence of the Namibian head of state as another fond memory all participants would take home. “His interest in sports events continues and pushed us to remain on the ball and do our best at all times, which is a very important component of our strategy,” said Kambatuku.
He concluded by saying that Cosafa and other dignitaries witnessing the experience were pleased with the smooth organization of the event, adding he is almost certain it would not take long before Namibia is accorded another opportunity to host a major sporting event.
The Cosafa Cup returns to Moruleng, South Africa next year, venue of Namibia’s historic victory in the regional annual tournament last year.
