Namibia confirmed its position as a global leader in climate action and sustainable development at the Legislators Forum for Friendly Exchanges, which took place in Xinjiang, Uyghur Autonomous Region, People’s Republic of China.
Namibia’s innovative green hydrogen and synthetic fuel projects, renewable energy facilities like the Cerim Lüdertz Wind Farm and Otjikoto Solar Station, and the building of a new desalination plant to provide long-term water security were among the major national projects on display.
Another significant event for Africa’s green industrialisation strategy was the recent Global African Hydrogen Summit in Windhoek.
The event, which brought together lawmakers and policymakers from all over the world, was held from September 10–17 with the topic “Building Global Partnerships for Joint Advancement of Common and Sustainable Development.”
Salomon April, speaking on behalf of the Namibian Parliament, underlined that environmental preservation cuts across all boundaries of ideology, geography, and politics.
He asserted that as lawmakers, “we are in a unique position to advance the frameworks required to move our economies in the direction of inclusive, sustainable, and green futures.”
April emphasised Namibia’s strength and innovation while also highlighting its susceptibility to climate change as a semi-arid country facing drought and water scarcity.
He commended Namibia’s constitutional commitment to environmental conservation, which is among the first in Africa, as well as the audacious actions being taken under the direction of President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, who became Namibia’s first female head of State in March 2025.
Namibia is happy to work with China and other nations on technology, renewable energy development, and desert reclamation, as April noted. However, he underlined that the green transition must remain “people-centred”, ensuring that no one is left behind, including women, young people, rural areas and informal labourers.
“Together, we can legislate for life, green our economies, and heal our planet,” April concluded, urging global solidarity in shaping a sustainable future.
