…thrashes UK royal Navy team

WALVIS BAY – During the occasion of the visit of the Royal Navy HMS Portland, just over a week ago, the netball team of the HMS Portland, including the ship’s captain, Commander Sarah West, the first female captain of a British naval warship, played a friendly netball match against the Namibian Navy team, which the hosts won 40:13.

The UK and Namibia have a lot in common, including shared democratic values, vibrant trade, cultural and educational links, and bonds of friendship and Commonwealth fraternity.

The ship’s visit signifies another chapter in the strong record of partnership to achieve a common goal of improved security in this region and throughout the world. On a local level, the British government continues to provide capacity-building support to the Namibian police and defence forces, while maintaining active and close relations with all arms of the Namibian security sector.

“Since sport is a tool that brings people and cultures together, a friendly match between the netball teams of the HMS Portland and the Namibian Navy team was played in Walvis Bay.

“The British High Commission congratulates the Namibian team for winning the game,” reads a statement from the British High Commission.
