WINDHOEK – The Namibian national cycling team on Friday once again demonstrated their ambitions at the Tropical Amissa Bongo (Tour de Gabon), when Costa Seibeb took a brilliant sixth place on the longest stage of the race.
Seibeb was part of an eight-man breakaway that formed after an intense first hour of racing, in which the riders covered nearly 50km. Seibeb pulled clear after his Namibian team mate, Loto Petrus paved the way by breaking away alone for several kilometres before being brought back. Seibeb’s breakaway worked well together throughout the 190km stage, before eventually fighting out the stage win, over seven minutes ahead of the peloton. Needless to say, Seibeb was pleased with his performance.
‘’I tried really hard to bluff in the final 15km so the others would think that I was not tired and I could attack before the sprint. I felt tired at the end, but I attacked with just over a kilometre to go, but the guys from Europcar and Cofidis were watching me, and they closed me down, and then the next attack went clear.”
