Namibians urged to eat more fish

WALVIS BAY – Namibians are being encouraged to eat more fish.

This is part of the Namibia Fish Consumption Promotion Trust’s (NFCPT) campaign as it marks the 12th National Fish Consumption Day (NFCD).

This year’s NFCD will be hosted in Mariental, Hardap’s regional capital.

It aims to enhance fish consumption awareness in regions less inclined towards fish as a dietary staple.

The Hardap region is among the leading meat-consuming regions in the country, with fish consumption less popular.

This event aims to change that narrative.

Speaking at the annual breakfast launch this week, Erongo governor Neville Andre said the aim is to achieve at least 20.4kg of fish per person annually, and sell 100 000 metric tonnes of mackerel locally.

“The NFCPT’s initiatives extend beyond consumption advocacy, including corporate social investments in education infrastructure. We aim to empower communities through education and economic opportunities derived from fisheries,” he said.

He then urged stakeholders to support this year’s NFCD activities, and surpass previous success in pledges and community impact.

Speaking on behalf of the fishing industry, Matti Amukwa underscored the trust’s commitment to making fish accessible and affordable to all Namibians.

“The NFCPT has tirelessly promoted fish consumption as a healthy alternative, supported by our partnership with the fishing industry,” he added.

He also highlighted the trust’s efforts in community engagement and youth involvement to foster a culture of fish consumption.

“The NFCPT was founded with the intention of making fish available to the population at reasonable prices, thereby increasing fish consumption and food security in Namibia. This has not been an easy task,” he remarked.

He then applauded NFCPT for the progress made over the years, noting the widespread reach of the Trust’s fish shops.

Amukwa praised the fishing industry’s ongoing support, which includes providing the NFCPT with fish, and sponsoring sports gear and prizes for the Fish Consumption Day.

“We are proud to be associated with the NFCPT and its initiatives, and will continue to extend our support in the coming years,” he added.
