By Staff Reporter WINDHOEK A Dorper ram last week sold for a whopping N$160ÃÆ’Æ‘ÀÃ…ÃÆ”šÃ‚ 000, setting a new record price for Namibia. The ram, belonging to Mr Phillip Strauss, known as the best Dorper breeder in Namibia’s breeding circles, was one of the many rams sold at an Agra auction. Various record prices were attained with 75 rams being offered at an average price of N$12ÃÆ’Æ‘ÀÃ…ÃÆ”šÃ‚ 14 which, according to Agra, is a price level that has never been achieved before. Another record concerned 19 Type 5 rams which were sold for an average of N$29ÃÆ’Æ‘ÀÃ…ÃÆ”šÃ‚ 200 each. The Type 5 is the highest-rated category for a ram. Ninety-three ewes were also sold at an average price of N$2ÃÆ’Æ‘ÀÃ…ÃÆ”šÃ‚ 636, with the highest bid being N$7ÃÆ’Æ‘ÀÃ…ÃÆ”šÃ‚ 200. Agra said in a statement issued on Tuesday that Dries Wiese, of Kasteel Wit Dorpers, was a guest seller at the Strauss auction and sold out his 25 white ram Dorpers at an average price of N$7ÃÆ’Æ‘ÀÃ…ÃÆ”šÃ‚ 079, as well as 80 white ewes priced at N$2ÃÆ’Æ‘ÀÃ…ÃÆ”šÃ‚ 080 on average. Agra held other auctions this year in January and early February, during which another 126 rams were sold. A combined auction of Nico Binneman and Freddie Dreyer saw 45 rams sold at an average price of N$6ÃÆ’Æ‘ÀÃ…ÃÆ”šÃ‚ 400 towards the end of January, while early this month Riaan de Klerk sold 81 rams at an average of N$4ÃÆ’Æ‘ÀÃ…ÃÆ”šÃ‚ 900, with top prices for Dorper ram and white Dorper ram being N$18ÃÆ’Æ‘ÀÃ…ÃÆ”šÃ‚ 000. According to Agra, top prices obtained for both individual and average are exceptional and, are proof of Namibia’s outstanding breeding quality.
