WINDHOEK – The country’s sports governing body the National Sports Commission (NSC) marked the re-registration of national sports codes and umbrella bodies for the calendar year 2013 – 2015 in Windhoek last week.

At the gathering, the NSC resolved to put specific strategies in place that will assist its functions in achieving its targeted goals and objectives in line with its mandate.

This initiative is one amongst important tasks that the NSC has undertaken in an effort to ensure that service delivery and accountability among all stakeholders is maintained to the benefit of athletes.

“I wish to congratulate all national sports federations and umbrella bodies that have complied with the registration requirements and at the same time would like to urge those that are still on the wrong side of the fence to follow suit,” said the NSC’s chairperson Vivienne Katjiuongua.

“Similarly, we have observed with great concern that at times sports federations and umbrella bodies have developed a tendency of organizing unplanned activities without prior consultation and approval from the commissioning body. This exercise possesses danger (in terms of) both budgetary implications and other related consequences. This practice is henceforth discouraged and I would sincerely appeal to offenders to stop since in future we will not entertain, neither grant approval for hastily arranged sporting events.”

Katjiuongua also called on all sports federations to submit their events calendar for the remainder of the year as well as for 2014 in order to allow the office to plan in advance and to ensure that as a country, Namibia does not attract sanctions from the respective international bodies regarding participation.

The Iron Lady of Namibian sport urged both NSC affiliates and non-affiliates to comply with the regulatory framework by acquainting themselves with the sports Act including regulations and the sports policy. “We do not want to hear excuses from administrators anymore in terms of adherence,” she concluded.
