WINDHOEK– Pegasus Entertainment Production and the University of Namibia (Unam)’s Drama Department present the wacky comedy, The Bald Soprano at the National Theatre of Namibia (NTN) Backstage tonight and tomorrow night at seven O’clock (19h00).
The Smiths are sitting around in their living room talking about a lot of nothing. Then the maid announces that the Martins have arrived. But are they who they think they are? The Smiths are offended that the maid wants to recite a poem and fire chief arrives. But is there a fire?
Written by Romanian playwright, Eugene Lonesco, The Bald Soprano is an absurd theatre piece that seems to go in a loop ending right back where it started. And in between, the two nonsensical couples, the Smiths and the Martins, the fire chief and the maid explore themes of language and communication, loneliness and isolation, time, society and class.
The play is directed by Unam’s 4th year drama student, Michelle Namase. Although this is only her second stint as director, she is no stranger to Namibian stages as an actress. Noteworthy is her portrayal of the mystical Gaia in 2013 Marego: Lets I forget. The cast is made up of Unam students, but not all from the drama department. In the roles are Dafi Desi as Mr Smith, Natasha Mguni as Mrs Smith, Selma Baemedi as Mrs Martin, Takudzwa Kamushinda as Mr Martin, Ashwyn Mberiri as the fire chief and Whilzahn Gelderbloem. Tickets are available through Computicket and at the door for N$50.
