Founding president Sam Nujoma voted at the Andries de Wet Point B polling station in the Windhoek East constituency yesterday.
Nujoma (95) cast his vote at exactly 09h39.
The former Head of State was accompanied by his wife Kovambo Nujoma, and his son Utoni Nujoma.
They were received by Electoral Commission of Namibia chairperson Elsie Nghikembua.
“I have done it. It is my democratic right to vote for my party,” Utoni told Nampa immediately after he cast his vote.
He said he is pleased to see that people were well-behaved.
“That is what we want. We want people to participate in the democratic process, and choose their candidate of their choice and vote. That is why we must build a peaceful democratic Namibia. We don’t want violence. We must talk to each other, and solve our problems through things like these elections,” he said.
Meanwhile, health minister Dr Kalumbi Shangula told this agency that he was excited to see a big number of Namibians exercising their right to vote, which was not the case during the colonial era.
“Don’t miss out on this opportunity. It comes once every five years. Once you get it, make use of it,” he said while encouraging potential voters.
Khomas region, with 10 constituencies, has the most voters among the 14 regions of the country.
About 287 107 voters have registered to vote in the Presidential and National Assembly elections in Khomas.
